Members of BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 and representatives from regional school districts recently embarked on a five-day visit to Wales, marking a significant milestone in a three-year partnership focused on advancing educational practices through the inquiry-based teaching methodology of Self-Organized Learning Environments (SOLE). The initiative, funded by the Taith grant, is a joint effort between StartSOLE and BLaST Intermediate Unit 17.
The initiative is structured in three phases, each focusing on a different perspective of the educational community: students, teachers, and academic leaders, including administrators and local authorities. This trip, concentrating on educational leadership, was the third phase of the international project and provided regional administrators with an immersive experience in the Welsh educational system.
During their stay, BLaST IU 17 and school district administrators visited 11 schools across the Powys and Cardiff regions. The visit offered a comprehensive look into Wales’ educational landscape, exploring different aspects of the education system as it pertains to the student, teacher, and/or community experience.
Rebecca Gibboney, Director of Educational Planning at BLaST IU 17, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership: “This three-year partnership has been a unique opportunity for our region. Our students and educators have been able to connect with peers virtually in Wales and collaborate on projects. Additionally, our administrators have participated in collaborative discussions. Our time in Wales opened our eyes to the ‘what if’ and gave us a fresh perspective of the possibilities.”
The partnership, made possible by the Taith grant, exemplifies BLaST IU 17’s commitment to enhancing educational practices through global collaboration. By engaging in shared learning experiences with international partners, BLaST IU 17 continues to strive for high-quality solutions that improve the educational system within the region, demonstrating a dedication to ongoing professional growth and innovation in education.
