Computer Science (CS) in PA

K-8 Virtual Pathway

Computer Science Professional Learning Program

Interested in learning more about CS in PA and how you can integrate CS into your own K-8 curriculum, no matter the content or the grade? This pathway is just what you are looking for! This pathway is a 100% FREE virtual experience consisting of asynchronous and synchronous online activities that support participants in the development and implementation of computer science in their own classroom.

The K-8 Virtual pathway supports K-8 educators involved with CS instruction, whether as stand-alone classes or those interested in integrating CS concepts and practices into other content-area instruction.

Who can attend?

ANY K-8 educator may participate! Grade-level teachers, content-area teachers, special education teachers, English language teachers, librarians, specialists, instructional coaches, etc.

You may be interested if you:

  • Are currently a PASmart 2.0 recipient, but not in the PDE K-8 pathway
  • Completed PASmart 1.0, but not the PDE K-8 pathway
  • Have complete SCRIPT training
  • Have participated in PASmart but wanted to engage additional educators in this cohort. Perhaps, you may consider mentoring/coaching a colleague through the pathway?

This is NOT recommended for individuals who have already completed the pathway as part of the PASmart Targeted Grant program.

Timeline

The Pathway consists of 8 “modules” of professional learning, each containing 6 hours of activities. Labeled alphabetically (A-H), the modules are sequential and broken into three phases: Learn, Plan for Implementation, Reflection. Participants can choose when they would like to attend the synchronous session for each phase, but they must be present for one of the synchronous sessions in each of the phases.

Synchronous Virtual Schedule:

Learn

*You must attend one of the kickoff events. After attending, the course will be released to you to start.

Plan for Implementation

*You must attend one of the Plan for Implementation check-ins.

Reflection

*Everyone must attend this final reflection.

Act 48

The CS in PA K-8 Virtual Pathway includes 48 hours of professional learning. The K-8 Pathway is NOT a series of stand-alone workshops. It is designed as a carefully scaffolded experience with supports for educators across the entire program. For this reason, Act 48 credits is only available to participants who fully participate and complete all required activities; partial credit is not available.

**Education majors currently enrolled in education classes may choose to audit the course and get a certification of completion.
