10/08/2018Description: This conference will provide an overview of literacy development for students with significant disabilities. The use of alternative pencils and authentic & meaningful writing activities for students with significant disabilities. Teaching strategies and informal assessment connecting writing and reading. Mrs. Hanser will introduce the Dynamic Learning Map. The day will include hands on practice and participants are encouraged to bring a Big Mac or Step by Step device if they use one in their classroom. Modeling of the color coded eye gaze chart and print flip charts will be included and made accessible for take home use in classrooms. Mrs. Hanser will share downloadable resources that participants can take back to their district. Her work is based on the extensive practices of Mrs. Karen Erickson. The day will conclude with shared writing.
Competencies: Participants will be able to identify 3 alternative writing tools and what students might benefit from them, identify 3 activities for supporting emergent writing using the full alphabet for a range of students with significant disabilities, identify 3 strategies to teach students how to write, identify the stages of developmental spelling and implications for students with significant disabilities.
COST: $40 includes Lunch, ACT 48 processing and materials

10/08/2018Course Description: Students today are faced with a constant stream of pressures from school, family, and peers – pressures they feel are never-ending in the 24/7 digital age. The strain of information overload and emotional overwhelm leads to increased distractibility and disorganization, anxiety and depression, anger and aggression. In short, our students – especially those with special needs – are experiencing toxic levels of chronic stress. And if we’re honest, so are we. Mindfulness skills – the ability to focus our attention here and now, without judgment – can help us cope with toxic stress in real-world, real-time ways. Mindfulness is the gateway skill to emotional resilience and well-being – for students and teachers alike. In this introductory workshop, you’ll learn ways to develop a personal mindfulness practice to help manage your own work and life stress. Then you’ll learn practical ways to be more mindful at school, allowing you to remain more calm and compassionate with your students. Finally, you’ll learn some basic steps to teach your students mindfulness skills that they can use to deal with their daily stress at school, and beyond. Seating is limited.

Adverse Childhood Experiences are a significant risk factor to physical and mental health in society. Often the psychological effects of trauma are common however the neurological and developmental impact on human development are less understood. Becoming a trauma informed professional is essential to promoting health, healing and wellness in children and adolescents. Developing a greater awareness and understanding of trauma informed practices helps to promote healthier development, a greater sense of empathy and greater success when managing maladaptive emotional and behavior issues. This professional seminar examines the psychobiology of trauma, how the trauma experience can lead to developmental, neurological, social and behavioral impairment on in children and adolescents. It also offers critical insights to increase success when implementing interventions and developing behavior modification strategies.
Learning Objectives
• To understand and identify trauma symptomology in children and adolescents.
• To understand the impact trauma has on brain development and neurological functioning.
• To understand how trauma impacts the social, emotional, physical and behavioral functioning in children and adolescents.

10/11/2018This training details the steps in establishing Tier One interventions in a School-Wide Positive Behavior Support System. The first day will include an overview of SWPBS, discussion of the Self Assessment Survey, establishing an Office Discipline Referral form, and establishing your building wide expectations. During day two teams will complete a building matrix, begin to write lesson plans to teach their expectations, and establish an acknowledgement system. On day three, teams will finalize their acknowledgement plan and clarify office vs. classroom based consequences, and establish procedures for discouraging inappropriate behavior. PARTICIPANTS SHOULD REGISTER AS A TEAM TO ATTEND. Lunch is provided. All three meetings (October 11, November 7 & December 6) take place in the Williamsport Office.

10/23/2018 – 10/24/2018This training requires demonstration of 18 verbal and physical competencies. Participants should come prepared and willing to demonstrate mastery of each competency. Safety Care Training is a two-full-day training that teaches the goals of safety management, interdisciplinary treatment, creates an understanding of challenging behavior, establishing a safe environment, practicing safety habits, delivering and differential reinforcement. Safety care training teaches incident minimization, de-escalation procedures, incident management (physical safety techniques) and post incident procedures.
Notes: This is a physical training. Participants should dress appropriately in loose, comfortable clothing. Please refrain from wearing flip flops, sandals, clogs, or open toed shoes. Athletic shoes such as sneakers are most appropriate. The training will require participants to shuffle backward, twist and turn and transition from a standing to floor position. Participants should only register if they are willing and able to demonstrate the physical competencies. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the facilitator. This training is not open to parents, outside agencies, or districts not within IU 17. School districts will be invoiced upon completion. Lunch will be provided on site. ** Participants must attend the entire two-day training to receive certification and Act 48 credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.

As many students with Autism receive instruction in the general education setting, this training will review characteristics of Autism, and provide specific strategies to build success in these settings. It will also highlight examples of stories of the changing landscape of inclusive education from this year's PDE conference attended and "One Without the Other" book by Shelley Moore.
