Description: The Open House is a showcase of STEM on the MOVE materials for all teachers in public and private schools, and community educators. It is an opportunity for educators to view and learn about the new items purchased for the Innovation Lending Library of the BLaST IU 17 as well as resources being used in the region’s K-12 schools by STEM faculty of Mansfield University. Please come to meet the new coordinator, learn about the new grants, and get a copy of the student scholarship application. STEM giveaways at 6:00 pm.

02/06/2020Description:This training runs from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm full participation is required. Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.

CCC-SLP Dana Vermilya, M.S., CCC-SLP Christine Bear, M.A., CCC-SLP Description: This hands-on workshop hosted in partnership by CIU 10, BLaST IU 17, and TIU 11 Training and Consultation will introduce participants to assistive technology making skills to create usable access products. Participants will learn basic soldering to join wire segments and assemble mono and stereo components for use in a variety of assistive technology applications. Those skills will be applied to create a switch tester that can be used determine status of those switches used by an individual with physical disabilities. Each participant will have the opportunity to choose to complete two other projects including switch-adapting a stuffed, electronic toy that they bring. This workshop is targeted for assistive technology specialists, occupational therapists, regular or special education teachers, and STEAM teachers interested in expanding maker opportunities into authentic special education applications! Competencies: Participants will be able to: • Identify tools that may increase opportunities for students with physical disabilities. • Learn basic soldering skills • Complete three AT projects that can be used with students when they return to their district • Identify new ways to include students with disabilities within their classroom. 9:00 AM - 2:00 PM (Registration starts at 8:45 AM)

02/11/2020The ABC’s of the Foreign Language Classroom is a supportive professional learning community of Foreign Language teachers, who strive to grow professionally and improve their practices in the classroom. These sessions are focused around developing a toolbox of 21st century strategies and best practices for the Foreign Language classroom. If you are starting to think of new, innovative ways that will freshen up your classroom, this is the perfect group for you! It does not matter the language you teach. It does not matter the level you teach. All that matters, is that you are willing to collaborate with this professional learning community. The training consists of two face-to-face workshops with colleagues that teach in any Foreign Language classroom. Participants are encouraged to sign up for both face-to-face sessions, but it is not required. Topics for training will include, but are not limited to: Comprehensible Input, Technology and Innovation in the Foreign Language Classroom, Aligning Classroom Instruction to ACTFL Standards. 02/12/2020To enhance your Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching (PIIC) experience, join us for our PIIC Coaching Caravan. To continue growing our coaching toolkit and coaching best-practices, participants will take their learning on the road and visit four different districts within the BLaST IU17 region. At each district, coaches will focus on one of the four elements of coaching including one-on-one and small group coaching, analyzing data, using evidenced-based literacy/instructional strategies, and strategies to promote reflective practices. Complete the entire Coaching Caravan to get the full four-quadrant experience! Participants will witness the quadrants in action, and then reflect on how these practices could be used within their own building or district. These caravans will focus on the process of coaching and is applicable to all identified PIIC coaches; however, it is also applicable to PreK-12 teacher leaders, instructional coaches, department chairs, curriculum coordinators, and principals. When registering with payment, the participant is purchasing the bundle, which consists of the four visits. If an event occurs and the participant is unable to attend, please let Rebecca Gibboney (rgibboney@iu17.org) know in advance for planning purposes.

Participants will take the assessments in these areas designed to fulfill the current requirements of No Child Left Behind for "highly qualified paraprofessionals." No Child Left Behind requires that all individuals entering the paraprofessional field to be Highly Qualified. To be considered Highly Qualified, individuals are required to have (1) of the following: • Have completed at least 2 years of post-secondary study • Possess an associate degree or higher • Pass a rigorous local assessment in reading, writing and mathematics. Within a SOLE, students are given the freedom to learn collaboratively using the internet. SOLE sessions are characterized by discovery, sharing, spontaneity and limited teacher intervention. Every SOLE session activates the learners’ creativity, requires critical thinking, and refines communication skills. This workshop examines how to use AP and SAT Suite of Assessments to ensure your students are prepared for college and career.
Those invited to attend the workshop are administrators, teachers and counselors. We encourage schools to send teams of up to five. Please note that because of limited space, no school will be able to enroll more than five participants.

02/24/2020This training details the steps in establishing Tier One interventions in a School-Wide Positive Behavior Support System. The first day will include an overview of SWPBS, discussion of the Self Assessment Survey, establishing an Office Discipline Referral form, and establishing your building wide expectations. During day two teams will complete a building matrix, begin to write lesson plans to teach their expectations, and establish an acknowledgement system. On day three, teams will finalize their acknowledgement plan and clarify office vs. classroom based consequences, and establish procedures for discouraging inappropriate behavior. PARTICIPANTS SHOULD REGISTER AS A TEAM TO ATTEND FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR. THE DATES ARE: 1/23/20, 2/24/20 & 3/19/20. Registration closes 1/16/20. Sign in begins at 8:00 AM
