02/03/2016 – 02/04/2016This training requires demonstration of 18 verbal and physical competencies. Participants should come prepared and willing to demonstrate mastery of each competency. Safety Care Training is a two-full-day training that teaches the goals of safety management, interdisciplinary treatment, creates an understanding of challenging behavior, establishing a safe environment, practicing safety habits, delivering and differential reinforcement. Safety care training teaches incident minimization, de-escalation procedures, incident management (physical safety techniques) and post incident procedures.
This is a physical training. Participants should dress appropriately in loose, comfortable clothing. Please refrain from wearing flip flops, sandals, clogs, or open toed shoes. Athletic shoes such as sneakers are most appropriate. The training will require participants to shuffle backward, twist and turn and transition from a standing to floor position. Participants should only register if they are willing and able to demonstrate the physical competencies. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the facilitator. This training is not open to parents, outside agencies, or districts not within IU 17. School districts served by BLaST IU 17 will not be invoiced. Registration fees will be covered by IDEA funding. Lunch will be provided on site.
** Participants must attend the entire two-day training to receive certification and Act 48 credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.

02/03/2016The MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) series is designed to give school teams the opportunity to reflect upon their MTSS/RTII practices as they relate to continuous school improvement. The initial day will be organized to explore the shift from RTII to MTSS in Pennsylvania and to define best practices related to the nine components of the framework. Each of the subsequent focus days will dig deeper into one of the nine components of the Pennsylvania MTSS framework. A continuum of tools and resources will be reviewed. Opportunities for team discussions and district networking will be embedded throughout the training series. Participants may choose to attend one or all of the training opportunities.

02/05/2016The ALICE program was authored by a police officer to keep his wife, an elementary school principal, safe after the tragic events at Columbine. Since these humble beginnings, ALICE continues to be the leading active shooter response program in the US. The purpose of ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training is to prepare individuals to handle the threat of an Active Shooter. ALICE teaches individuals to participate in their own survival, while leading others to safety. Though no one can guarantee success in this type of situation, this new set of skills will greatly increase the odds of survival should anyone face this form of disaster. 02/09/2016High Severity Behavior 1 The High Severity Behavior modules are designed for organizations that support individuals with the potential for extremely dangerous behavior. It includes strategies for developing safety plans,advanced physical safety procedures (releasing from rear chokes and hair pulls) team safety strategies, and safe floor hold procedures. Participants will learn advanced verbal and physical de-escalation techniques including the rear hair pull release, rear choke release, head lock release, triad and supine. Various therapeutic holds will be demonstrated and practiced. Participants will learn to de-escalate a crisis situation and check out of core competencies. High Severity Behavior 2 The second High Severity Behavior module provides training in physical management of dangerous objects, prevention and management of fights, and procedures for prevention and management of dangerous behavior in vehicles and on trips.

02/24/2016This program is aimed at developing essential knowledge and leadership skills for school and system leaders to supervise, assess, and improve classroom instruction, and to facilitate the development of professional learning communities in their schools and school districts, thereby increasing student learning and achievement. The knowledge and skills that are embedded in this program correlate to the domains of "Strategic and Cultural Leadership" and "Leadership for Learning" which are included in the recently adopted Principal Effectiveness Framework for Pennsylvania school leaders (PDE, 2014). The major focus of this program is on instructional leadership for student achievement, anchored on the research-based premise that if school and system leaders focus their sustained efforts on ensuring effective instruction in every classroom, every day, then increased student learning and achievement will occur. Also, because of the complexity involved in the leadership role of school leaders, the improvement of instruction and student learning can best be accomplished through the implementation of professional learning communities (DuFour and Marzano, 2011). As per Act 45 approval, the program includes scheduled sessions, online interaction, and job embedded assignments. This program is scheduled to take place on February 24, 2016, March 30, 2016, April 20, 2016, and May 18, 2016. *Participants must attend all scheduled sessions and complete required assignments/projects in order to receive Act 45 credit hours *
