Texas Instrument (TI) Keys to Success for Grades 7-12 Math and Science

01/08/2015This workshop is designed specifically for Grades 7-12 math and science teachers who utilize Texas Instrument graphing calculators. Give your students the best tools and tips for success in the classroom and on high stakes exams. This workshop will unlock the hidden features of TI technology so math and science students gain confidence, better understand concepts and perform their best. We will take both the teacher and student perspective on different TI Graphing Calculators and Software, integrating educational technology into instruction so that the calculator is a learning tool not just an answer box. We will also integrate probes into the classroom to collect data for analyzing to see STEM in action. It is preferred that participants bring their own TI graphing calculator, however, for those that cannot we will have some available.

01/15/2015The Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching (PIIC) is a state-wide system of support that enhances the work of school-based instructional coaches. School-based instructional coaches provide professional development for teachers and school leaders focused on refining classroom practices, increasing student engagement, and improving student achievement. Sessions will be designed around PIICs four elements of coaching and include strategies for one-on-one and small group coaching, analyzing data, using evidenced-based literacy/instructional strategies, and strategies to promote reflective practices. Because these sessions focus on the process of coaching, it is applicable to all curriculum models including Learning-Focused Schools, Reading Apprenticeship, and Standards Aligned System. The content of these sessions is applicable to PreK-12 teacher leaders, instructional coaches, department chairs, curriculum coordinators, and principals. Identified PIIC coaches are required to attend all sessions throughout the year while non-PIIC participants are encouraged but not required to attend all sessions throughout the year.

01/22/2015 – 01/23/2015This training requires demonstration of 18 verbal and physical competencies. Participants should come prepared and willing to demonstrate mastery of each competency. Safety Care Training is a two-full-day training that teaches the goals of safety management, interdisciplinary treatment, creates an understanding of challenging behavior, establishing a safe environment, practicing safety habits, delivering and differential reinforcement. Safety care training teaches incident minimization, de-escalation procedures, incident management (physical safety techniques) and post incident procedures.
This is a physical training. Participants should dress appropriately in loose, comfortable clothing. Please refrain from wearing flip flops, sandals, clogs, or open toed shoes. Athletic shoes such as sneakers are most appropriate. The training will require participants to shuffle backward, twist and turn and transition from a standing to floor position. Participants should only register if they are willing and able to demonstrate the physical competencies. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the facilitator. This training is not open to parents, outside agencies, or districts not within IU 17. School districts served by BLaST IU 17 will not be invoiced. Registration fees will be covered by IDEA funding. Lunch will be provided on site.
** Participants must attend the entire two-day training to receive certification and Act 48 credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.

Effective RtII Using PA Core Standards - Every Student, Every Classroom, Every Day - All teachers, PreK-12, can accelerate student progress in reading and writing using the principles of RtII and PA Core Standards. The session will describe an RtI full-accountability model that is grounded in current research and educational trends. Participants will discuss the role of PA Core Standards in Response to Instruction and Intervention; Best Practices aligned to a successful Response to Instruction and Intervention framework; and expert grade level instruction and differentiated support across a wide range of reading levels.

Ensure All Teachers, K-12, Make the Three Shifts Required for Implementation of PA Core Standards - All teachers, PreK-12, can accelerate student progress in reading and writing using the PA Core Standards. Learn how to do it NOW. The session will describe how to strengthen grade-level instruction and formative assessment through the three shifts: Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction; reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational; and regular practice with complex text and its academic language.
