Join a group of like-minded people from our region to discuss the DIBELS data collected by your school. Participants will be expected to bring their DIBELS Fall data and individual student books as we utilize a variety of resources to analyze the results and collaborate to gain greater insights. Resource sharing and school level team attendance is strongly encouraged. This session will be facilitated by certified DIBELS Mentor, Amy Breon.

11/04/2014PoC's and staff supporting VLINC will cover a variety of topics around supporting VLINC students and their families. Topics include:
1. Demonstration and discussion of the Accelerate Education Elementary program. A representative from Accelerate Education will be on hand to review the current offerings and discuss their instructional model.
2. Group Work: Mapping best practices for supporting students and families at home.
3. VLINC staff will demonstrate the use of GENIUS to track student progress, attendance and grades.
4. VLINC staff will discuss the required steps to complete courses once students have finished their work. These procedures are required to finish all courses.
5. VLINC staff will demonstrate how to use the GENIUS auto email system to send student progress emails to students and families.
6. Group Work and Presentations: PoC's will present a variety of topics to the group for discussion. Topics will include planning for upcoming meetings, training needs, and the upcoming PAEEF Conference in March of 2015.

11/05/2014The Pennsylvania Department of Education strongly encourages educators to collaborate on the development of Student Learning Objectives (SLO). These sessions are designed to allow for teachers from specialty areas to collaborate on SLO development that are focused on the content standards from their particular areas. An IU facilitator will guide teachers in completing the SLO Template based on collegial conversations about specific content instructional areas and performance measures that are often germane to a few people within each district. All participants will need to have an introductory understanding of the SLO process as a prerequisite for this sessions.

11/06/2014This is a basic course for employees provided by law enforcement which describes general practices for dealing with an active shooter and how to respond when an active shooter enters your vicinity. Included in the discussion will be a profile of an active shooter, how you should respond when law enforcement arrives on the scene, lessons learned from past and recent shooting incidents, and steps to consider when preparing for and managing an active shooter situation. The course will also include an update on current threat awareness and steps you can take to better prepare for and enhance your own personal safety.
Students will be able to identify potential scenarios for using run, hide, or fight options if faced with an active shooter situation. Students will also have a better awareness of various threats they may potentially encounter and steps they can take to enhance their personal safety, both on and off the job.
This 2-hour program will include:
• How to prepare for and respond during an act of workplace violence or active shooter situation.
• Lessons learned from recent and past incidents.
• Potential scenarios and techniques for using run, hide, or fight options.
• How to respond when law enforcement arrives on the scene.
• Current threat awareness and steps to take to enhance your own personal safety and survival.This is valuable information you can use both on and off the job to stay safe if ever faced with an Active Shooter situation.

11/11/2014This session is designed around the unique needs of PreK-2 writers. Participants will explore the continuum of development for young writers, paying close attention to what constitutes an emergent, early, and fluent writer. Participants will examine their own students' writing to determine where their students are on the writing continuum and how to support their young writers towards proficiency of the PA Core Standards for Writing. Participants will learn how to use writing demonstrations, small group writing, and independent writing to create a comprehensive and differentiated approach to teaching writing. The following essential questions will guide this session: How do I determine where my writer's are on the writing continuum? How do I differentiate my writing instruction while moving all writers towards proficiency of the PA Core Standards? How do I utilize teacher demonstrations, small groups, and independent writing to create a comprehensive and differentiated approach to writing instruction? Please bring examples of your own student's writing (produced independently) along with the PA Core Standards for Writing from your grade level.

11/11/2014These half-day sessions will provide teachers with a review of the concept of growth as measured by PVAAS, and introduce the PVAAS teacher specific reports that are a direct result of the PVAAS Roster Verification process. Teachers will develop a foundational understanding as to how PVAAS measures growth for PVAAS teacher specific reporting. The session will include a complete review of the PVAAS teacher specific value-added report, as well as available diagnostic reporting at the teacher specific level. Teachers will have the opportunity to review their own PVAAS teacher specific reporting if they choose, or use a demo site if they prefer to review their reports privately. Teachers will have an opportunity to ask questions throughout the session.
AUDIENCE: These sessions are designed for teachers who receive PVAAS teacher specific reporting. LEAs/districts sending teachers to the session are encouraged to include a district or school administrator with their group, as questions may arise regarding district/school practice or policy.
MATERIALS NEEDED: Participants should bring a laptop or tablet, along with their PVAAS username, password, and PPID to access reporting. Alternately, participants may wish to bring a printed packet of their teacher specific reports. A demo site will be available to use during the training.
FEE: There is a $25 fee for this event. This fee covers Act 48/registration fees. School districts will be invoiced upon completion.

11/13/2014The Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching (PIIC) is a state-wide system of support that enhances the work of school-based instructional coaches. School-based instructional coaches provide professional development for teachers and school leaders focused on refining classroom practices, increasing student engagement, and improving student achievement. Sessions will be designed around PIICs four elements of coaching and include strategies for one-on-one and small group coaching, analyzing data, using evidenced-based literacy/instructional strategies, and strategies to promote reflective practices. Because these sessions focus on the process of coaching, it is applicable to all curriculum models including Learning-Focused Schools, Reading Apprenticeship, and Standards Aligned System. The content of these sessions is applicable to PreK-12 teacher leaders, instructional coaches, department chairs, curriculum coordinators, and principals. Identified PIIC coaches are required to attend all sessions throughout the year while non-PIIC participants are encouraged but not required to attend all sessions throughout the year.

They will learn to de-escalate a crisis situation and test out of core competencies.

11/24/2014The Math Design Collaborative provides middle school and high school teachers with readily available formative assessment lessons (Fals) to enhance and activate the conceptual understanding of the math skills required of a 21st century learner. These well-crafted lessons have been aligned to the PA Core and are embedded with the NCTM math practices.
AUDIENCE:Â Middle School Math Teachers (grades 5-9); the enrollment is limited to 24 participants (not to exceed 4 per school).
COST:Â $100 (includes four (4) days training and two (2) on-sight visits).
DATES: September 29-30, 2014 (Northeast Bradford High School) and October 27 and November 24, 2014 (BLaST IU 17 - Canton Office).
SUBSTITUTES:Â School districts will receive substitute reimbursement for the initial training and ongoing support hours.
School districts will be invoiced upon completion. Lunch will be provided onsite.

11/25/2014Lycoming College is hosting this one day professional development opportunity specifically designed for biology teachers. Participants attend multiple sessions, each with a different activity or lab focused on both current topics in cellular biology and practical teaching strategies. Participants will receive kits to support the activities with an estimated value of $300 - $500. This workshop is unique because some of the session leaders are teams of high school students.
This year, Mr. Paul Andersen from Bozeman, Montana will be a guest speaker at the Biotech Conference. Mr. Andersen is an award winning speaker and science educator who has been featured on TED, Youtube Guru, Montana Teacher of the Year and was identified as one of the National School Boards Association "20 to Watch" technology leaders. He hosts a popular website (www.bozemanscience.com) which is popular with both teachers and students.  Paul has also been a featured speaker at National Association of Biology Teacher’s national convention.  Paul will bring his trademark enthusiasm as well as his knowledge of technology and science teaching skills to our conference this year. In addition to Mr. Andersen, teacher favorite Dr. Margaret Franzen from the 3D Molecular Designs, will also be guest speaker.
