04/02/2014 – 04/03/2014This training requires demonstration of 18 verbal and physical competencies. Participants should come prepared and willing to demonstrate mastery of each competency. Safety Care Training is a two-full-day training that teaches the goals of safety management, interdisciplinary treatment, creates an understanding of challenging behavior, establishing a safe environment, practicing safety habits, delivering and differential reinforcement. Safety care training teaches incident minimization, de-escalation procedures, incident management (physical safety techniques) and post incident procedures.
This is a physical training. Participants should dress appropriately in loose, comfortable clothing. Please refrain from wearing flip flops, sandals, clogs, or open toed shoes. Athletic shoes such as sneakers are most appropriate. The training will require participants to shuffle backward, twist and turn and transition from a standing to floor position. Participants should only register if they are willing and able to demonstrate the physical competencies. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the facilitator. This training is not open to parents, outside agencies, or districts not within IU 17. School districts served by BLaST IU 17 will not be invoiced. Registration fees will be covered by IDEA funding. Lunch will be provided on site.
** Participants must attend the entire two-day training to receive certification and Act 48 credit. Partial credit will not be awarded.

04/07/2014This session is designed around the unique needs of K-2 writers. Participants will explore the continuum of development for young writers, paying close attention to what constitutes an emergent, early, and fluent writer. Participants will examine their own students' writing to determine where their students are on the writing continuum and how to support their young writers towards proficiency of the PA Core Standards for Writing. Participants will learn how to use writing demonstrations, small group writing, and independent writing to create a comprehensive and differentiated approach to teaching writing. The following essential questions will guide this session: How do I determine where my writer's are on the writing continuum? How do I differentiate my writing instruction while moving all writers towards proficiency of the PA Core Standards? How do I utilize teacher demonstrations, small groups, and independent writing to create a comprehensive and differentiated approach to writing instruction? Please bring examples of your own student's writing (produced independently) along with the PA Core Standards for Writing from your grade level.

04/08/2014Jersey Shore Elementary School has been selected by PaTTAN as a model school in its implementation of School Wide Positive Behavior Support. The school is hosting three visits for schools that are interested in implementation of SW PBIS. The visits will summarize Tier One implementation including developing expectations, designing a matrix, effectively managing consequences, reinforcement efforts with students, data management, and evaluation of effectiveness at Tier One. The visits will also detail interventions at Tier Two and Three; including social and academic groups, check in and checkout, counseling interventions, and universal screening efforts. Visitors will have an opportunity to visit classrooms to visualize embedding SW PBIS into the classroom.

They will learn to de-escalate a crisis situation and test out of core competencies.

This is our foundation workshop. It shows teachers in any content area how to use the five types of writing to increase students' understanding and retention of course content while simultaneously increasing student involvement and motivation to learn. 04/09/2014This is a requested training designed for schools to initiate the development of Tier Two interventions in their School-Wide Positive Behavior Support System. Participants attending with a tier two team, including an administrator, can complete the steps to establish a check in check out system. Teams will audit existing interventions, establish entrance and exit rules required to access tier two interventions, and determine from existing data interventions that are in need of development. Participants will complete the online training for Check In/Check Out System available through SWIS with a subscription.

04/24/2014The Pennsylvania Institute for Instructional Coaching (PIIC) is a state-wide system of support that enhances the work of school-based instructional coaches. School-based instructional coaches provide professional development for teachers and school leaders focused on refining classroom practices, increasing student engagement, and improving student achievement. Sessions will be designed around PIICs four elements of coaching and include strategies for one-on-one and small group coaching, analyzing data, using evidenced-based literacy/instructional strategies, and strategies to promote reflective practices. Because these sessions focus on the process of coaching, it is applicable to all curriculum models including Learning-Focused Schools, Reading Apprenticeship, and Standards Aligned System. The content of these sessions is applicable to PreK-12 teacher leaders, instructional coaches, department chairs, curriculum coordinators, and principals. Identified PIIC coaches are required to attend all sessions throughout the year while non-PIIC participants are encouraged but not required to attend all sessions throughout the year.

Time will be built into this session to review and revise participants' assessments. Participants should also bring a digital device to support them in the development and revisions of their assessments.
