How Did You Get That? Improving Open Responses in Math

09/27/2017Open response questions in math, questions that ask students to show or explain answers, are often the most difficult questions for students to solve. They also present a unique window into student thinking. The purpose of this workshop is to understand why students struggle with these types of questions and then develop strategies that produce complete and thorough answers. Participants will learn techniques to get every student involved in mathematical thinking and show students how to take more responsibility for learning. There will be a special emphasis on checking for understanding, improving mathematical vocabulary, deepening math concepts through problem solving, and reading strategies for word problems in math. Participants will learn how to use focused criteria to score open response answers and create great math assignments. All examples align with the Pennsylvania Core Standards. Critical Strategies: 1. Build fluency and writing in math: quick writes and quick quizzes 2. Check for understanding: 1 Penny White Boards 3. Students as teachers: Quiz Quiz Trade 4. Deepen understanding by oral review: Pepper Cards 5. Build Vocabulary: Sorts, visuals, and games 6. Attack the questions: Preview/Mark it/Look back 7. 09/28/2017Effective guided reading lessons begin with knowing the readers. This five day training will provide K-3 teachers with a comprehensive understanding of how to implement guided reading within the core reading program. Guided reading is a student-centered approach to reading instruction that meets students' individual reading needs while scaffolding them towards grade-level standards. Throughout this five day professional learning experience, participants will engage in hands-on learning, observe actual guided reading lessons taught by the presenter, have opportunities to apply their learning between sessions, and receive the Fountas and Pinnell Prompting Guide 1 & 2. In order to transfer professional learning into practice, participants will be expected to work with at least one group of students, take weekly running records with each child in the group and analyze their experiences. Presenter is Dr. Janet Bufalino, Reading Recovery trainer and Chair of the Reading Department at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.

Notes:
- Days 1 & 2: September 28th and 29th - running records and setting levels - Effective reading instruction begins with meaningful assessments. These sessions will teach participants how to conduct and analyze running records, an individualized reading assessment that enables teachers to determine children's strengths and needs. Teachers will learn how to use running record data to determine a teaching focus for each guided reading group. As a follow-up to this session, participants will be asked to conduct running records on their own students and then bring them to the next session for discussion, feedback, and the planning of guided reading lessons.
- Days 3 & 4: October 26th and 27th - guided reading and modeling lessons - These days will focus on strategies for planing and implementing guided reading including book introductions and how to effectively prompt each student as they read. Prompting individual students is the best part of guided reading. Making on-the-spot decisions with individual students allows a teacher to differentiate instruction to support each child in accelerating their learning. Participants will have the opportunity to observe the presenter modeling guided reading lessons with actual elementary students. As a follow-up to this session, participants will be asked to plan and conduct their own guided reading lessons and then bring them to the next session for discussion and feedback.
- Day 5: January 12, 2018 - Refined guided reading and feedback - The final day of this series will provide participants opportunities to share, reflect and receive feedback on their implementation of guided reading. Participants will continue to expand their understandings of guided reading as they engage in activities around the challenges of different levels of books, refining prompting skills, and share experiences teaching guided reading within a multi-tier system of support.
In order to fully engage in this professional learning opportunity, participants need to commit to all five days, try out their new learning with their own students, and reflect on their practice with the cohort.
Please note: Act 48 credit hours will only be awarded to individuals who attend all five days.
No partial credit will be awarded.
