Participants will explore the continuum of development for young writers, paying close attention to what constitutes an emergent, early, and fluent writer. Participants will examine their own students' writing to determine where their students are on the writing continuum and how to support their young writers towards proficiency of the PA Core Standards for Writing. Participants will learn how to use writing demonstrations, small group writing, and independent writing to create a comprehensive and differentiated approach to teaching writing. The following essential questions will guide this session: How do I determine where my writer's are on the writing continuum? How do I differentiate my writing instruction while moving all writers towards proficiency of the PA Core Standards? How do I utilize teacher demonstrations, small groups, and independent writing to create a comprehensive and differentiated approach to writing instruction? Please bring examples of your own student's writing (produced independently) along with the PA Core Standards for Writing from your grade level. The school is hosting three visits for schools that are interested in implementation of SW PBIS. The visits will summarize Tier One implementation including developing expectations, designing a matrix, effectively managing consequences, reinforcement efforts with students, data management, and evaluation of effectiveness at Tier One. The visits will also detail interventions at Tier Two and Three; including social and academic groups, check in and checkout, counseling interventions, and universal screening efforts. 8:00 am: Quality Behavior Solutions - Safety Care Specialist Recertification 8:00 am - 4:00 pm 33 Springbrook Drive Canton, PA 17724 USA 570-673-6001 This training requires demonstration of 18 verbal and physical competencies. Participants should come prepared and willing to demonstrate mastery of each competency. Participants will recertify on verbal and physical de-escalation techniques. Various therapeutic holds will be demonstrated and practiced. They will learn to de-escalate a crisis situation and test out of core competencies. This is a physical training. Participants should dress appropriately in loose, comfortable clothing. Please refrain from wearing flip flops, sandals, clogs, or open toed shoes. Athletic shoes such as sneakers are most appropriate. The training will require participants to shuffle backward, twist and turn and transition from a standing to floor position. Participants should only register if they are willing and able to demonstrate the physical competencies. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the facilitator. This training is not open to parents, outside agencies, or districts not within IU 17. School districts served by BLaST IU 17 will not be invoiced. This is our foundation workshop. It shows teachers in any content area how to use the five types of writing to increase students' understanding and retention of course content while simultaneously increasing student involvement and motivation to learn. Most importantly, this workshop gives teachers the help they need to efficiently and fairly evaluate writing so that students become more skillful as a result of the process. | 04/09/2014(1 event)8:30 am: School-Wide Positive Behavior Support System - Tier Two Interventions 8:30 am - 3:00 pm 2400 Reach Road Williamsport, PA 17701 USA 570-323-8561 This is a requested training designed for schools to initiate the development of Tier Two interventions in their School-Wide Positive Behavior Support System. Participants attending with a tier two team, including an administrator, can complete the steps to establish a check in check out system. Teams will audit existing interventions, establish entrance and exit rules required to access tier two interventions, and determine from existing data interventions that are in need of development. Participants will complete the online training for Check In/Check Out System available through SWIS with a subscription. | 04/10/2014 | 04/11/2014(1 event)8:30 am: Student Learning Objectives (SLOs): An Introduction (Part 1) 8:30 am - 3:30 pm 33 Springbrook Drive Canton, PA 17724 USA 570-673-6001 This session is an introduction to Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) and their role in PA's educator effectiveness system. Participants will design, build, and review SLOs for use in guiding instruction and determining student mastery and/or growth as part of PA's educator effectiveness system. This training is open to all school districts and required for SLO Pilot districts. Participants will review the requirements and timeline for the SLO Pilot; review each component used in the SLO process, including the role of high-quality performance measures; and examine tools and techniques available to teachers and principals.
