Exploring Geology Through Time

Description:

Students imagine themselves as material moving through 10 different process stages of Earth, then calculate their geologic time by illustrating and constructing a rock cycle.

Modeling and Investigating Watersheds

Availability:

M & F 11:30 to 1:30; TWTh 9:00 to 2:00

Description:

Students apply “rain” over a topographic model and observe the water runoff. From their observations they identify the location of major bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, and streams. The activity introduces students to the impacts of mining and agriculture.

Modeling Stream Erosion and Deposition

Description:

Students can view commonly formed land features including canyons, braided streams, and deltas. The students can then create, observe, and interpret erosional and depositional patterns when rainwater flows over an area.

Water Treatment and Filtration

Description:

Students will observe physical characteristics of water, such as clarity, color, odor and how each is affected from the beginning of the treatment process until the end.

Reading River Sediments

Description:

Students are introduced to and use topographic maps and learn about rock types and river dynamics. The students will use this lab to conduct mineral exploration which simulates real-life economic, societal, and issue-oriented problems.

Soil Sizing using Sieves

Availability:

Description:

Students can bring in their own soil samples to determine particle size distribution. This process separates fine particles from more course particles by passing the material through a number of sieves of different mesh sizes.
