10/12/2014 | 10/13/2014(1 event)8:30 am: An Introduction to John Collins Writing 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Lycoming College - Wertz Center, Jane Schultz Room Williamsport, PA 17701 United States An Introduction to John Collins Writing: Improving Student Performance through Writing and Thinking Across the Curriculum (Grades 4-12) - For teachers in all subject areas grades 4 and above, department heads, principals, supervisors, curriculum committee members, and special educators. This is our foundation workshop. It shows teachers in any content area how to use the five types of writing to increase students' understanding and retention of course content while simultaneously increasing student involvement and motivation to learn. Most importantly, this workshop gives teachers the help they need to efficiently and fairly evaluate writing so that students become more skillful as a result of the process. PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN HOW TO... • Integrate writing into every class without sacrificing the teaching of content • Use writing to save time during classroom instruction without piles of additional papers to correct • Utilize writing as a catalyst to enhance the quality of classroom discussions • Employ the power of "effortful retrieval" • Empower students to use self-monitoring and peer feedback during the writing process accomplishing more in less time • Quickly create great writing assignments that promote learning of content and motivate students • Improve writing skills and content knowledge using the four essential writing assignments • Implement a portfolio and authentic assessment model that’s manageable • Use the Five Types of Writing to improve test scores and help achieve "Adequate Yearly Progress" • Tie it all together integrating workshop content with portfolio and authentic assessment techniques, mastery learning, differentiated instruction and outcomes-based education in today’s classroom. | 10/14/2014(1 event)N/A: Collins Part 2 - Aligning FCAs to PA Core Literacy Standards N/A - Lycoming College - Wertz Center, Jane Schultz Room Williamsport, PA 17701 United States John Collins is returning to the IU 17 region to go deeper with Collins Writing. This session is designed for Grades 4-12 teachers and administrators (all content areas) who have already had an introduction to Collins Writing. The course content will focus on developing quality Type 3 writing assignments that meet the demands of the PA Core Literacy Standards and Academic Content Standards. Participants will examine their grade specific standards and course curriculum to create Focus Correction Areas (FCAs) for the 2014-2015 school year. Special attention will be given to how FCAs can be used to support meaningful and consistent use of academic vocabulary. Throughout the session, IU consultants will provide guidance on how Type 3 writing assignments can be used to support Student Learning Objectives (SLOs). This is primarily a work session in which participants will be asked to design standards-aligned Type 3 writing assignments and FCAs that can be used in the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year. | 10/15/2014(1 event)8:30 am: Collins Day 3 Focus on Reviewing Students Work 8:30 am - 3:30 pm Wertz Center - Jane Schultz Room 700 College Place Williamsport, PA 17701 This work-session is designed for Gr. 4-12 teacher leaders, instructional coaches, principals, and curriculum coordinators who will be implementing Collins Writing during the 2014-15 school year. Participants are expected to have implemented Types 1-3 during September and beginning of October and collected students writing samples according to the Implementation Folder Process. Participants will learn how to review Implementation Folders and analyze student writing. Participants will use the review process to inform next steps for the individual teacher as well as for the entire system. SLO connections will be made for participants using Collins as a measure for SLOs. Participants will need to bring their Collins Writing Folders with student samples of Types 1-3 writing.
