10/01/2014The Student Learning Objective (SLO) is a process to document a measure of educator effectiveness based on student achievement of content standards. SLOs are part of Pennsylvania's multiple-measure, comprehensive system of Educator Effectiveness authorized by Act 82 (HB 1901). The SLO process enables educators to have a great deal of control and responsibility over their instructional practice and evaluations. In this process, teachers accept responsibility for crafting the goals, setting student performance indicators/targets, and developing performance measures which will be utilized to determine teacher effectiveness with the students they are instructing in a specific grade level, course, or subject area.
You are invited to participate in this innovative work session, designed to stimulate ideas and conversations surrounding how SLOs could be drafted for speech-language pathologists. Participants will be speech/language pathologists with novice to veteran experience in the field, sharing their perceptions of what constituents a strong SLO and lending their expertise for writing goals, performance measures and performance indicators. An outcome for the day will be the draft development of SLOs for presentation to administrators for proposed implementation during the 2014-2015 school year.

10/09/2014This training requires demonstration of 18 verbal and physical competencies. Participants should come prepared and willing to demonstrate mastery of each competency. Participants will recertify on verbal and physical de-escalation techniques. Various therapeutic holds will be demonstrated and practiced. They will learn to de-escalate a crisis situation and test out of core competencies.
This is a physical training. Participants should dress appropriately in loose, comfortable clothing. Please refrain from wearing flip flops, sandals, clogs, or open toed shoes. Athletic shoes such as sneakers are most appropriate. The training will require participants to shuffle backward, twist and turn and transition from a standing to floor position. Participants should only register if they are willing and able to demonstrate the physical competencies. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the facilitator. This training is not open to parents, outside agencies, or districts not within IU 17. School districts served by BLaST IU 17 will not be invoiced. Registration fees will be covered by IDEA funding. Lunch will be provided on site.

This is our foundation workshop. It shows teachers in any content area how to use the five types of writing to increase students' understanding and retention of course content while simultaneously increasing student involvement and motivation to learn. Most importantly, this workshop gives teachers the help they need to efficiently and fairly evaluate writing so that students become more skillful as a result of the process. 10/14/2014John Collins is returning to the IU 17 region to go deeper with Collins Writing. This session is designed for Grades 4-12 teachers and administrators (all content areas) who have already had an introduction to Collins Writing. The course content will focus on developing quality Type 3 writing assignments that meet the demands of the PA Core Literacy Standards and Academic Content Standards. Participants will examine their grade specific standards and course curriculum to create Focus Correction Areas (FCAs) for the 2014-2015 school year. Special attention will be given to how FCAs can be used to support meaningful and consistent use of academic vocabulary. Throughout the session, IU consultants will provide guidance on how Type 3 writing assignments can be used to support Student Learning Objectives (SLOs). This is primarily a work session in which participants will be asked to design standards-aligned Type 3 writing assignments and FCAs that can be used in the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.
Participants are asked to bring the following:
- a copy of their PA Academic Content Standards (subject specific)
- a copy of the PA Core Literacy Standards that are most appropriate to their grade level and subject area
- a digital device to locate online resources and to generate Type 3 writing assignments
- any curriculum resources that may be needed to develop Type 3 writing assignments for the fall of 2014

10/15/2014This work-session is designed for Gr. 4-12 teacher leaders, instructional coaches, principals, and curriculum coordinators who will be implementing Collins Writing during the 2014-15 school year. Participants are expected to have implemented Types 1-3 during September and beginning of October and collected students writing samples according to the Implementation Folder Process. Participants will learn how to review Implementation Folders and analyze student writing. Participants will use the review process to inform next steps for the individual teacher as well as for the entire system. SLO connections will be made for participants using Collins as a measure for SLOs. Participants will need to bring their Collins Writing Folders with student samples of Types 1-3 writing. 10/15/2014Full day, train-the-trainer model for administrator teams. This session will focus on training staff, including strategies for responding to common questions and activities that reinforce learning about PVAAS and having one-on-one conversations with teachers about their PVAAS teacher specific reports as part of the Educator Effectiveness System.
AUDIENCE: Four (4) member LEA/district administrative team (could include Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Principal, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Director of Professional Development, Director of Special Education/Pupil Services, subject area supervisor).
PREREQUISITE: To gain the most benefit from this session, participants should be familiar with the concept of how PVAAS measures growth. To fully maximize your time in this full-day session, we ask each participant to come prepared by viewing the following PVAAS Virtual Learning Modules (found under the Concept of Growth category on the PVAAS site):

Using Nearpod in a traditional face-to-face classroom or synchronous online cyber class allows for student-learning objectives to be delivered with immediate feedback on responses. 10/27/2014The Math Design Collaborative provides middle school and high school teachers with readily available formative assessment lessons (Fals) to enhance and activate the conceptual understanding of the math skills required of a 21st century learner. These well-crafted lessons have been aligned to the PA Core and are embedded with the NCTM math practices.
AUDIENCE: Middle School Math Teachers (grades 5-9); the enrollment is limited to 24 participants (not to exceed 4 per school).
COST:Â $100 (includes four (4) days training and two (2) on-sight visits).

10/29/2014This is a basic course for employees provided by law enforcement which describes general practices for dealing with an active shooter and how to respond when an active shooter enters your vicinity. Included in the discussion will be a profile of an active shooter, how you should respond when law enforcement arrives on the scene, lessons learned from past and recent shooting incidents, and steps to consider when preparing for and managing an active shooter situation. The course will also include an update on current threat awareness and steps you can take to better prepare for and enhance your own personal safety.
Students will be able to identify potential scenarios for using run, hide, or fight options if faced with an active shooter situation. Students will also have a better awareness of various threats they may potentially encounter and steps they can take to enhance their personal safety, both on and off the job.
This 2-hour program will include:
• How to prepare for and respond during an act of workplace violence or active shooter situation.
• Lessons learned from recent and past incidents.
• Potential scenarios and techniques for using run, hide, or fight options.
• How to respond when law enforcement arrives on the scene.
